The Winter Hike is free and open to all ages and will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Schoenbrunn Historical Village, 1984 East High Ave., New Philadelphia, in Tuscarawas County. Walkers will have the opportunity to take in the beautiful scenery, while giving their heart a brisk workout.
Door prizes and creative outdoor activities will be part of the fun, while entertainment for children and adults will be provided throughout the day. A nutritious lunch of hot ham and bean soup and cornbread will be provided to round out the day.
“Our goal is to show people they can get outside and exercise during winter months and that it can be fun,” shared Barbara Burns, Healthy Tusc chairperson and the WIC director at the Tuscarawas County Health Department. “We had over 400 area residents attend the hike last year and we hope to have at least as many people participate this year.”
The Winter Hike is a sponsored event by Healthy Tusc, which is a task force led by health-minded leaders in the area who are working to battle the wellness crisis in Tuscarawas County. The group is hoping to accomplish many of the same goals set forth by Healthy Ohio, its state level counterpart. Improving physical activity, improving nutrition and access to healthy foods, and improving coordination of policy and resources direct to the prevention and reduction of obesity are all directives of the task force.
In a more local effort, Healthy Tusc will organize events to get people moving and exercising, promote year-round exercise, and will utilize local resources, including historical sites to provide a backdrop for the events.
This organization, along with the United Way, recognizes the need for such events to promote heart health and awareness and is eager to encourage an overall healthier community through participation in future endeavors.
