A daughter of the late Henry C. and Isabelle K. Engler, Jean was born Feb. 3, 1928, in New Philadelphia. She attended New Philadelphia High School and married the love of her life, Lester Hicks, on July 3, 1948. Together the couple reared five children and shared in 58 years of marriage prior to Lester’s passing.
For 19 years, Jean was employed as a server by New Philadelphia Elks Lodge 510. She was a longtime member of the Child Conservation League and served for a number of years on the Tuscarawas County Board of Elections, where she served as a precinct committeeperson. Additionally, she was a longtime member of New Philadelphia First Christian Church, where she taught Sunday school and was also a member of the Master Builders Class. In her spare time, she also enjoyed reading and was an avid fan of the Cleveland Indians.
Jean leaves behind a family that includes her children, David (Barb) Hicks of Salina, Kans., Joyce (Cliff) Robson of New Philadelphia, Tim (Janie) Hicks of Salina, Kans., Marilyn (Dave) Douglas of Dover, and Kevin (Becka) Hicks of Uhrichsville; grandchildren, Amanda (John) Freeman, Heather (Brandon) Murdock, Scott Sussman, Brent (Alicia) Robson, Aimee Robson, Brian Grygo, Brett Grygo, Brittany (TJ) Geers, Rachel Hicks, and Paige Hicks; stepgrandchildren, Darren Euwer, Derek Euwer, Darrin Wendlindt, and Darrah Wendlindt; brothers and sisters-in-law, Evelyn Moore of Columbus, Ward (Betty) Hicks, Virgil (Wanita) Hicks, Foster (Roberta) Hicks, Gracie (Tom) Koller, and Ellen Hicks all of New Philadelphia; cherished friends, Mona Heaton and Ruth Errington; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by sisters, her identical twin, Jane Linard, and Ruth Maurer; and brothers, Clifford and Richard Engler.
Services will be held Feb. 10, at 10:30 a.m., at Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory, New Philadelphia, with Pastor Jeff Cooper officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Burial Park, New Philadelphia. Following the committal, the family will return to the Geib Family Center, adjacent to the New Philadelphia funeral home, where a meal and fellowship will be shared. The family will receive friends Feb. 9, from 4-7 p.m., and one hour prior to services.
