William Garabrandt

William Lee “Smoke” Garabrandt Sr., 81, of Uhrichsville, died Jan. 31, 2011, at Beacon Pointe Rehabilitation Center, following a lengthy illness.

Bill was born Nov. 12, 1929, in Dennison, a son of the late Samuel and Verna Rae Garabrandt. A 1948 graduate of Dennison High School, Bill was a lifelong resident of the Twin City area and a longtime member of Uhrichsville First Assembly of God. He retired from Stocker Sand and Gravel, Gnadenhutten, in 1975 after many years of employment as a welder there.

Bill’s surviving family includes a son, William L. Garabrandt Jr. of Florida; daughters, Diane Garabrandt of Wooster and Teresa Garabrandt of Uhrichsville; stepchildren, whom he raised like his own, Debra, Penny Richard, Charlotte, and Brenda; grandchildren, Ryan (Catherine), Kristina (LaBecca), Wayne, Kyle, and Gloria Ann; great-grandchildren, Alexia and Colt; nine stepgrandchildren; 16 stepgreat-grandchildren; sister, Flora (Roger) Poulton of Freeport; his former spouse, Beverly Garabrandt of Uhrichsville; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Opal V. “Boots” Garabrandt, whom he married April 9, 1999; brothers, Sam, Charles, and Glenn Garabrandt; and sisters, Marjorie Marie Cottrell, Betty Espenschied, and Gladys Love.

Services were held Feb. 4, at R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home, Dennison, with Pastor Tom Klaserner officiating. Interment was in Uhrichsville’s Union Cemetery.
