Here’s to your health.

That is the idea for the third annual Tri-County Health Expo, which will take place at the Buckeye Event Center in Dalton Feb. 18 and 19.

With the cost of health care soaring, the best prevention in reducing those high costs is to simply not get sick, and the best way to not get sick is to arm yourself as heavily as possible, not with drugs but with knowledge.

That is exactly what the promoters of the upcoming third annual Tri-County Health Expo hope to do during the two-day affair, which will take place Feb. 18 and 19 at the Buckeye Event Center in Dalton. The event, formerly the Holmes County Health Expo, was changed for a couple of reasons. One, it was taking place in Dalton, and was drawing from Wayne County and Holmes County, and the second was that it opened doors to include many new vendors, thus creating a more impressive field of health professionals.

With the goal and mission “to help you and your family have a healthy future,” the object of the expo is to present health information to the public in one arena, with vendors promoting health care products, foods and drinks, books, and other items, as well as services, from hospitals and health care facilities to other medical professionals and chiropractors, all of whom will have experts available to answer questions and disperse information.

“We’ve expanded and made everything bigger and better in order to provide as much information as possible to the public. It made sense to expand and include the surrounding areas around Holmes County,” said Zedrick Clark, owner of Nature’s Food Market and public relations director for the event. “We’ve gone the extra mile to try to get every aspect of the health industry involved here.”

That includes a number of guest speakers.

Friday’s guest speaker list kicks off at 10 a.m. with LaVina Weaver, who will talk about building healthy relationships. At 11 a.m., Clark will speak on the topic of understanding confusing food labels, while Dr. Russ Pavkov will help manage stress at 1 p.m. At 2 p.m. Clark will again take center stage with keeping your children healthy, and Charlotte Thompson will discuss how to better understand digestion.

Saturday, Weaver begins the schedule at 10 a.m., joining Dr. Snavely with a seminar on anxiety disorders, followed by an 11 a.m. session by banker Marion Troyer about how to prevent financial fraud. Noon will see a feature on treating burns with B&W Salve, and the rotation will end with Marvin Ropp’s 1 p.m. seminar on mineral deficiencies and celiac disease.

“We have tried to put together a very well-rounded number of speakers who will touch on a lot of areas which are important to the public,” said Clark. “People need to realize that things like Marion Troyer’s banking fraud information affect them mentally and physically from a health standpoint.

“That’s the kind of thing we wanted to achieve this year, an event that reaches out to everyone and connects on health issues in a lot of ways. One of the biggest things we can do through this expo is to educate people on as many things as possible. Educating ourselves about health issues and what kinds of products are available is the best way to arm ourselves with quality information. The easiest way to treat sickness is to learn how to prevent it.”

In addition to the health expo, the annual Buckeye Tool Expo will also be going on at the same time, in the same location, meaning that the public can come and experience a lot in the two-day span, and it’s all for free.

“We decided that since the tool expo was free, we’d keep ours free too, and let people come in and have a very educational, informative time that would also be very entertaining,” said Clark. “There’s a whole lot to do and see.”

Add in that the Buckeye Event Center also has a shuttle that will transport people from the center to Kidron, where the air works auction is going on, and there’s more than enough to cram into two days.

“We’re expecting a huge crowd,” said Clark. “These two events have generally drawn between 5,000 and 6,000 people annually, so this should be a huge show. We’ve got a chance to help people learn a lot about being healthy, all under one roof, and it’s absolutely free.”

The show will take place Friday, Feb. 18, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday, Feb. 19, from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The Buckeye Event Center is located at 624 Henry St., Dalton.
