Belle is a girl who is dissatisfied with life in a small provincial French town, constantly trying to fend off the misplaced affections of conceited Gaston. The Beast is a prince who was placed under a spell because he could not love. A wrong turn taken by Maurice, Belle’s father, causes the two to meet.

What ensues is the story of one of Disney’s most beloved musicals, Beauty and the Beast. The Hiland High School music department will bring Beauty and the Beast to life for its annual musical performance, which will take place Feb. 25-27, and March 5 and 6.

Beauty and the Beast is a timeless classic which personifies love’s ability to overcome great odds. The musical is both touching and funny, with plenty of exciting numbers and heartwarming moments. The first published version of the fairy tale was a rendition by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve.

Belle, the beauty of the musical, will be played by Hiland senior Braylee Miller, while the Beast will be played by senior Austin Yoder. In addition, there are a host of supporting roles that are designed to bring laughter and frivolity to the enchanted evening. The role of Gaston will be performed by Jordan Weaver, while Lumiere (Andrew Yoder), Mrs. Potts (Lydia Stutzman), Cogsworth (Caleb Halfhill), Chip (Tammy Keim), Wardrobe (Jill Troyer) will lend a hand in supporting roles. Together with the choir and the student orchestra, songs like Be Our Guest, Something There, The Mob Song and, of course, Beauty and the Beast, will come to life, just like the many characters involved in the musical.

“It’s a super-fun musical that is nice because many kids are already familiar with it,” said director John Harris. “The kids have really had a great time preparing for it, and it should be a lot of fun for everyone.”

As it has been over the past several years, Jann Hershberger will lead a live orchestra, with students making up the ensemble this year. Mindy Miller is serving as the assistant director, choreographer and costume creator. Tickets are on sale now, and may be reserved by calling Hiland High School at 330-893-2626 during school operating hours. The cost is $7 for adults and $5 for seniors and youth.

Show times are slated for 7 p.m. for the Feb. 25, 26 and March 5 shows, with the Sunday, Feb. 27 and Sunday, March 6 shows scheduled for 2:30 p.m. matinees.
