Middle school thespians sing and dance away the winter blahs with winter musical

What happens when a 13-year old girl who is an advice guru wannabe decides to start doling out recommendations on her very own advice show, produced in the family garage? Find out when New Philadelphia’s Welty Middle School thespians present Dear Edwina Jr. on the Welty school stage Feb. 18-20. The show, part of Music Theatre International’s Broadway Junior Collection, with book and lyrics by Marcy Heisler, features music by Zina Goldrich.

Edwina Spoonapple has many talents, but she feels overshadowed by her extremely talented siblings. Acutely aware that other kids struggle with similar problems, Edwina and friends answer letters in the hopes of easing the concerns of their peers, all while adding a big dose of song and dance to the mix. Edwina hopes that her advice show will be a success, resulting in her being invited to be a part of the Advice-a-Palooza Festival. Young Spoonapple thinks that, with such a prestigious invitation, she will finally be able to outshine her siblings and prove her worth. Caught up in her quest, Edwina is oblivious to the interest of Scott, who has a crush on the young lady and cares about her just as she is.

The winter musical, under the direction of Chad and Christa Roberts and student director Josie Waugh, consists of Edwina, played by Alexis Cunningham, along with Richelle Aksterowicz, Sydney Banks, Milena Bartell, Briana Burger, MacKenzie Cardani, Shawnee Gibson, Kylie Harris, Rebekah Hayman, Abby Jennings, Kelci Kinsey, Kelaiah Kneuss, Jake Ligmanowski, Tessa McInturf, Molly McKnight, Taylor Meese, Casey Miller, Hannah Orr, Summer Price, Macie Raber, Sierra Ramos, Calvin Reed, Robyn Ruhd, Sami Sigler, Amber Snyder, Julia Strawn, Hayley Jo Thacker, Mitch Tulak, Josie Waugh, Luke Weaver, Emily Wincek, Maddie Wherley, and Tristin Wright.

Support staff includes assistant choreographer Casey Miller, and stage managers Trevor Welch and Maddie McDade. Set designer/builder is Chad Roberts.

Show times are Friday and Saturday, Feb. 19 and 20, at 7:30 p.m. The Feb. 21 matinee is at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the door, and are $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens.
