T-County Youth History Patriot Day to be held Feb. 26 at New Town Mall

Rock Your History is the theme of the first ever T-County Youth History Patriot Day Feb. 26. Reenactors and other costumed characters will be on hand all day to let students get close up and personal with history.

Tuscarawas County teens and kids can step back in time and rub shoulders with World War II’s Rosie the Riveter, President Lincoln and his wife, Mary, Revolutionary War villain Simon Girty, and even a snake oil swindler, along with a host of other historical characters, during the T-County Youth History Patriot Day on Saturday, Feb. 26, at New Philadelphia’s New Town Mall.

“We are using the theme, Rock Your History,” explained Laura Milarcik, marketing coordinator for the Dennison Railroad Depot, Uhrichsville Clay Museum, and Historic Schoenbrunn Village. “Kids can get their photos taken all day with the Rock Your History logo, and even get a chance to record a radio commercial about history.”

The event, which runs from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., will also feature military reenactors.

“One group will be recreating a WWII Army Battalion aid station, and the other group will be depicting soldiers getting some well deserved rest and relaxation behind the lines. There will be food items, games, and lots of personal stuff that the typical soldier would have used, as well as a weapons display.”

Depictions of frontier life during the Revolutionary War will be shown, and Operation Lifesaver will be passing out treats for the kids. A Living History table will provide the unique opportunity for those attending to speak with military veterans and ask them questions about their experiences.

Demonstrations will include corn grinding, Moravian stars, woodworking, flintknapping, butter churning, colonial and native games, spinning, hobo writing and more.

“The Tuscarawas County Public Library is offering many great things all day long,” added Milarcik.

“We will have a sign up to win a copy of the New York Times best-seller and an upcoming film, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, by Seth Grahame-Smith, and the first 100 fourth through eighth-graders will be receiving a free book, Jason’s Gold, by Will Hobbs,” said Michelle Ramsell, library director. “From 1 to 2 p.m., children can make colonial rag dolls, and from 2-3 p.m., we will be making colonial marbles.”

Throughout the day, attendees can also visit the library table to take the Oregon Trail Challenge, with storytelling sessions at both 11 and 11:30 a.m. I Can Cure What Ails You will be presented at 1 p.m., and Sights and Sounds of the Civil War from a Civil War Soldier will be at 1:30. The Story of the Dream Catcher and Ghostly Tales from the Battlefield will be at 2 and 2:30, respectively.

The event, held from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., is free and open to the public.

“We are excited to present this first ever opportunity to the young people of Tuscarawas County,” said Milarcik. “Hopefully, this will become an annual event for our area.”
