Buckeye Career Center students to compete at State SkillsUSA competition

All students at Buckeye Career Center belong to a Career Technical student organization. These organizations or clubs are recognized nationally and statewide with various competitions for students to showcase their skills with other students in similar programs.

Saturday, March 5, many students from Buckeye Career Center competed throughout the state in their Regional contests. Students in the SkillsUSA programs were at the Knox County Career Center, where the following students received awards:



Bronze winners (third place):

- Travis Riddle (Indian Valley) in Automotive Refinishing Technology

- Drew Patterson (Strasburg) in Collision Repair Technology

- Emily Grandison (Claymont) in Cosmetology

- Tom Mackintosh (Carrollton) in Industrial Motor Control

- Flecia Myers (Indian Valley) in Nail Care

- C-Jay Matthews (Dover) in Precision Machining

- Todd Engstrom (Claymont) in Technical Drafting

- Dillon Garrett (Dover) in Welding



Silver winners (second place):

- Cody Shetler (Strasburg) in Criminal Justice

- Sue Miskimen (New Philadelphia) in Medical Math



Gold winners (first place):

- Louella Shoup (Dover) in Basic Health Care

- Jade Harding (New Philadelphia) in Prepared Speech



Opening and Closing team consisted of Eric Vuchkovich (Fairless), Kris Naylor (Carrollton), Destiny Meese (Claymont), Becca Sanders (Claymont), Heather Metz (Claymont), Kayla Rausch (New Philadelphia), Jessica Little (Newcomerstown) and Nigel Hackenbracht (Ridgewood).

All of the above competitors will compete at the State SkillsUSA competition on April 29 and 30 in Columbus.

Students from the Early Childhood Education and Teaching Professions programs competed at the FCCLA Regional Star/Skill Event competition in Granville. Their rating is not a ranking with others, but an individual rating based on a rubric of criteria.

The Early Childhood team, juniors Cassie Cooper (New Philadelphia), Jamie Clegg (Newcomerstown) and Hunter Coffey (Indian Valley), received silver medals.

Junior Malarie Renfrew (Garaway) obtained a gold medal and will move on to the State competition in Language and Literacy.

And seniors Bethany Mangon (New Philadelphia), Tasha Nedrow (New Philadelphia), and Emilee Welfley (QDA) were recognized with a silver medal and a chance to move on to the State competition with their Community Service Project: Project Comfort - blankets for children.

The FCCLA Culinary Arts events were held at Bradford’s Columbus Culinary Institute with the following awards:

- Senior Hot Team – Anthony Brown (Carrollton), Chloe Coy (Carrollton) and Joe Molesky (Carrollton) received a bronze medal

- Senior Garde Manger – Taylor Eli (Carrollton) received a bronze medal

- Junior Hot Team – Ryan Anslow (Claymont), Ryan Cordray (Tuscarawas Valley) and Lincoln Leeper (Claymont) received a bronze medal

- Junior Pastry Arts – Liz Herman (Tuscarawas Valley) received a silver medal

- Junior Garde Manger – Madilyn Berry (New Philadelphia) received a silver medal



From the FFA programs, the Natural Resources program sent a Wildlife and Nature Team to compete at the Marysville Invitational. With 47 schools represented, the Buckeye team of William Wilson (Carrollton), Luke Walters (Carrollton), David Walton (Tuscarawas Valley), Quinn Dickey (Indian Valley), Karissa Kidd (Indian Valley) and Tiffany Meyers (Conotton Valley) placed second in Wildlife and sixth in Nature. William Wilson placed second individually, while Luke Walters placed fifth. They will compete Saturday, March 12 at the FFA District 8 in Zanesville.

Finally, from the Agricultural and Diesel Technology program, Aaron Westhoefer (Ridgewood) and Christian Deibel (Ridgewood) have won at various levels to be competing at the FFA State Ag Diagnostics Contest held March 10 and 11 at the University of Northwestern Ohio.
