Evelyn Ray

Evelyn Ray, 92, of New Philadelphia, died March 23, 2011, at Union Hospital, Dover.

A daughter of the late William and Anna Spahr, Evelyn was born April 21, 1918, in Mill Township. She was a 1938 graduate of New Philadelphia High School and on June 8, 1940, she married Ernest Ralph Ray. The couple shared 68 years of marriage prior to Ernest’s passing in 2009.

Evelyn was a member of First Christian Church, New Philadelphia. She enjoyed knitting, sewing, and tending to her gardens as well as playing cards with her friends.

Evelyn is survived by her son, Richard (Silvia) Ray of New Philadelphia; daughter, Anita Kniphuisen of Tucson, Ariz.; grandchildren, Sonia (Josh) Walker and Nicholas Ray, both of New Philadelphia, Richard (Lori) Kniphuisen of Avondale, Ariz., Raymond (Theresa) Kniphuisen of Midlothian, Va., Daniel (Martha) Kniphuisen of San Diego, Calif., and Christopher (Mary) Kniphuisen of Tucson, Ariz.; great-grandchildren, David and Cara Kniphuisen of Midlothian, Va.; brother, Gerald (Ilene) Spahr of Grand Island, Neb.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; son-in-law, Raymond Kniphuisen; and brothers, Kenneth and David Spahr.

Services celebrating Evelyn’s life were held March 26, at First Christian Church, New Philadelphia, with Pastor Jim Borton officiating. Burial was in Sherrodsville Memory Gardens.
