“We want to thank Dover, New Philadelphia, county, state, and township officials for their great cooperation in helping us develop traffic control plans that should ensure the safety of all Run for Home participants,” said Run for Home Road Runners Club president Matt Ritzert. Organizers are asking drivers to be cautious when driving through the Dover-New Philadelphia area Sunday and to expect some delays. “We want drivers to be aware that there’ll be a lot of people on the roads and some traffic delays are likely from 1-4:00 p.m. on Sunday,” said Ritzert. While most roads will remain open during the race, a variety of traffic controls will be put in place, including closed lanes and changes in traffic light signals.
The half-marathon, team relay, and five-mile walk will start in Tuscora Park at 1 p.m. The 13.1 mile half-marathon and team relay route will take runners from Tuscora Park to Dover City Park and back to Tuscora Park in New Philadelphia. The half-marathon is part of the Allied Machine and Engineering Tuscarawas Valley Challenge and the Ohio Subway Challenge series of races. Some of the major roads on the route include North Broadway, Ray Avenue NW, Union Avenue NW, and 4th Street NW in New Philadelphia.
In Dover, the route includes South and North Wooster Avenue, Race Street, Tremont Avenue, Black Snake Hill Road, SR 800, Front Street, Iron Avenue, and the Boulevard.
The half-marathon, team relay, and five-mile walk all start in Tuscora Park on Al Maloney Drive and will finish in the stadium. The fun run route takes runners and walkers around the perimeter of Tuscora Park, while the kids’ run follows a short route near the park rides. A variety of businesses, youth groups, church groups, and civic organizations will have aid stations along the route to offer the runners and walkers water and sports drinks. Run for Home officials say participation in all events is expected to top last year’s record numbers. “We already have more than 400 people signed up for the half-marathon and nearly 300 people registered for the five-mile walk,” Ritzert said.
All proceeds from the Run for Home will benefit the Tuscarawas Valley Habitat for Humanity. Many of the families currently living in Habitat-built homes will be among the hundreds of volunteers supporting the Run for Home. Habitat for Humanity is planning construction of a new home in New Philadelphia this spring.
Run for Home sponsors include Union Hospital; Allied Machine and Engineering Corporation; AultCare; Dover-Phila Federal Credit Union; Dominion; Mark’s Place Salon & Spa; Parkway Nissan Lincoln Mercury; Hennis Care Centre of Dover and Bolivar; Krugliak, Wilkins, Griffiths & Dougherty Attorneys-at-Law; Lauren Manufacturing; Super Fitness; Hitchcock Sound Company; Second Sole shoes and apparel; Domino’s Pizza, and the Tuscarawas County Dairy Farmers. Additional sponsors include Smith Ambulance; Buehler’s of Dover and New Philadelphia; First Federal Community Bank; John Patrick Picard Architect; Dover Orthopaedic Center; Roberts Medical Uniforms; First National Bank of Dennison; and the Charles Mackey Family.
In addition to the races on Sunday, the public is invited to the Run for Home Health and Fitness Fair to be held in the Tuscora Park pavilion Saturday, from 2-6 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. More than a dozen health-related businesses and organizations will participate.
The public is also invited to a pasta dinner at the Park Place Teen Center in the pavilion building Saturday, from 3-6 p.m. The dinner will benefit the Fit Youth Initiative summer walking program.
For the third consecutive year, the reigning Miss Ohio will join the festivities. Becky Minger will sing the national anthem at the start of the race and then participate in award presentations for the kids run, one-mile fun run, and other races.
