Union Hospital recognized again for emergency medicine outcomes
For the second consecutive year, Union Hospital in Dover has been ranked among the top five percent of all hospitals in the nation caring for patients admitted through the emergency department. As the result of that performance, UH is a recipient of the HealthGrades 2011 Emergency Medicine Excellence Award.
Carey Gardner, director of development and community relations, said HealthGrades evaluated the mortality rates of nearly 5,000 hospitals around the country and ranked each hospital for their performance.
“HealthGrades considered patient outcomes for 12 of the most common life-threatening medical emergencies including heart attack, stroke, pneumonia, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD,” Gardner said. “Their study included seven million Medicare patients who arrived at a hospital ER for initial treatment and were then admitted to the hospital for further medical care. It considered the full continuum of a patient’s care from admission to discharge.”
Gardner said those hospitals performing in the top five percent in the nation were designated as Emergency Medicine Excellence Award hospitals. Union Hospital first received this award in 2010, an event that prompted an outpouring of congratulations from the community and was a source of pride for all hospital employees and physicians.
“Becoming a two-time award recipient is a real honor for the UH family and more importantly, great news for our community. Patients who come to a hospital recognized with a HealthGrades Emergency Medicine Excellence Award had, on average, a 40 percent lower death rate compared to patients treated at non-recipient hospitals,” Gardner said.
Gardner noted that the award recognition is the result of the skill and dedication of physicians and hospital employees throughout the institution.
“Providing care that produces life savings outcomes begins with the patient’s arrival in the ER and continues throughout their hospitalization. Everybody involved in the patient’s care while they’re in this hospital, and those who support the caregiver’s work, can take pride in this achievement.”
