Polly Vitt

Polly L. Vitt, 99, of New Philadelphia, died April 8, 2011, at Union Hospital, Dover.

Polly was born Nov. 2, 1911, in Riverside, Tenn., a daughter of the late Tom and Belle Akers, and attended Dover High School. She was a homemaker and a longtime member of Sacred Heart Church and the church’s Altar Society.

Polly loved life and was still very active and independent until the time of her death. She enjoyed going to auctions, tending to her beautiful flowers, and her large collection of dolls and teapots. She was an avid quilter, having won first place in the 2009 Tuscarawas County Fair for one of her many quilts.

Polly married Frank Vitt Sr. on Jan. 12, 1929, and shared 77 years of marriage prior to his death in 2006.

Surviving are sons, Frank (Vicki) Vitt Jr. and David L. (Brenda) Vitt, both of New Philadelphia; sister, Sue Schlemmer of New Philadelphia; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends, Don and Fran Wemple.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Bill Kennedy; great-grandson, Ryan Allan Vitt; four brothers; and four sisters.

Services were held April 11, at Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory, New Philadelphia, with Father Jeff Coning officiating. Burial alongside her husband was in Calvary Cemetery, New Philadelphia.
