The Distinguished Alumnus Award is presented to a person who has dedicated his or her life or career to the service of humanity. The 2011 recipient is Dr. Kurt Fondriest. Dr. Fondriest is an expressive art therapist at Misericordia Home in Chicago. Twenty years ago he initiated an expressive art studio program for people living with developmental disabilities. He is a holistic minister with his own holistic therapy practice, The Healingseed Expressive Art Ministries. He also serves as a non-denominational minister.
The Alumnus Achievement Award is given to a person whose contributions have made an impact on society and the community. The 2011 recipient is Dr. J. David Jackson. Dr. Jackson is currently president of J. David Jackson Group. The firm specializes in leadership coaching/developing, change management, and organizational development. He is an expert presenter on leaders maximizing their abilities and living a balanced life. Clients of his continue to note, “He has a gift for coaching, coupled with a sincere compassion for others, which provides the formula needed to drive meaningful life change.”
The Alumnus of the Year Award is awarded to an individual who has demonstrated lifetime leadership and abilities in his or her chosen field. The 2011 recipient is Deb Anastasiadis. Anastasiadis is an adult oncology nurse specialist at University Hospital’s Seidman Cancer Center Case Medical Center, designated National Cancer Institute Hospital. She is the operations manager for Seidman Cancer Center at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren and has recently begun to work in Cleveland to facilitate the opening of UH Seidman Cancer Center free standing cancer hospital - the second in Ohio and one of only 14 hospitals in United States designated as an NCI facility. She is involved with orientation of new oncology staff and developing process plan implementation and operations of medical and radiation departments.
The Citizen of the Year Award is awarded to an individual who has been active in community education and awareness. The 2011 recipient is Mary Ellen Campbell. Campbell is currently employed by Dave Smith Realty at Claymont Housing in Uhrichsville. She attended Bliss Business College in Columbus and is a current student of Life’s School of Hard Knocks. She currently serves on the Clay Museum Committee and is active with the Tuscarawas County Democratic Women, Miss Clayland Scholarship Program, Polar Express, Tuscarawas County Democratic Party, the Claymont Foundation, and has served as a seamstress for productions at the Little Theatre of Tuscarawas County, Garaway High School, and Claymont High School.
The foundation is awarding the seventh annual Teacher of Year Award. Teachers are nominated by their peers and the award is based on the quality of teaching, impact on students, commitment to the educational process, and the pursuit of lifetime learning. The 2011 recipient is Amy Barnabi. Barnabi is a sixth grade social studies-language arts teacher at Claymont Intermediate School (CIS), a seventh grade research and computer skills teacher, and an eighth grade movie and presentation teacher at Claymont Junior High School. She also runs the THIINKFit Project. In its second year, the program offers students at CIS an opportunity to exercise 20 minutes a day, five days a week, before school begins. THIINKFit has also been used by Claymont Preschool, Eastport Elementary, and Park Elementary. Various schools across Ohio have begun implementing the THIINKFit Project as well.
In addition to these individual recognitions, the annual scholarship awards will be announced and the grant recipients will be recognized.
