Civil War anniversary treasure

One hundred fifty years ago at Fort Sumpter, the first shots were fired to begin the Civil War.

This war took more than 600,000 lives. Many brave boys from Holmes County answered the call to arms.

Benjamin Franklin Wade, the oldest son of Albert and Ruth Wade born in Military Valley near Becks Mill, enlisted and was quickly promoted to the rank of sergeant and was highly respected by his men and officers.

In Alabama, Frank was taken prisoner and sent to a federal parole camp near Vicksburg, and in March of 1865, Frank and a large group of Union soldiers were loaded on the boat Sultana for their ride home to freedom.

This ship was packed, with 2,000 men, plus cargo. Frank found a warm place by the boilers and spread his blanket to sleep.

At three o’clock in the morning, the boilers exploded, killing more than 1,700 soldiers and passengers. The body of Sergeant Benjamin Franklin Wade was never recovered. We salute this gallant Holmes County Civil War hero.
