“We wanted to focus on women’s heart health, but also decided to have a bit of fun with the break-out sessions, which I think people will really enjoy,” said Kim Nathan, Union Hospital manager of employee health and wellness and occupational medicine, who indicated that the program is open to anyone 10 and older. “This is a very family-friendly event with something for everyone,” she said.
Reservations are required for this event. Call the hospital at 330-343-3311, ext. 2165, to reserve your spot. Comfortable clothing is recommended. Men are welcome to attend. For more information on the NEOUCOM grant program, visit http://www.womenshealth.gov.
Sessions include healthy snacking, with free samples and expert advice from a Union Hospital dietitian; fun fitness, an interactive demo of the newest trends in fitness; and a combination session including massage by a licensed massotherapist and health assessment administered by Union Hospital registered nurses that includes a Body Mass Index and blood pressure check. Each session is designed to teach and promote heart-healthy lifestyles for women.
The program is funded by a grant from NEOUCOM for the promotion of women’s heart health.
“While the incidence of heart disease among women has become more publicly recognized in recent years, it is still often mistakenly thought of as an older woman’s disease,” said Nathan. “What people may not realize is that, while heart disease is the leading cause of death in women over 65, it is actually also the third leading cause of death among 25- to 44-year-old women and second among women aged 45-64 years. Genetics, of course, are a factor, but a few simple - and even fun - lifestyle changes can greatly reduce the risk of heart disease.”
