Bobby Jacobs

Bobby Joe Jacobs, 60, of Kimbolton, died May 1, 2011, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family.

Bobby was born June 29, 1950, in Cambridge, and is survived by his father, Robert L. Jacobs. He was preceded in death by his mother, Joann Jacobs. Bobby was a graduate of Newcomerstown High School, class of 1968, and also attended the Columbus Career Academy and studied radio broadcasting. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served as a broadcast specialist and radio operator during the Vietnam War. He was employed at the former General Tire and Rubber Company, Newcomerstown, for 33 years as a calendar operator and an employee in the shipping department. He then worked as sales specialist at the Lowe’s Store, New Philadelphia, for five years.

Bobby attended Guernsey United Methodist Church and was a member of the BPOE Lodge 1555, Newcomerstown Elks. He also served as president of the United Steelworkers Association Local 496 and was a member of the contract committee which was involved in contract negotiations for the union. He helped coach his son’s little league team, K. of C., in the Cy Young Leagues and also played softball for the former Baker’s AG team for many years. Bobby also bowled in the Cy Young Lanes bowling leagues and was an officer and writer for the National Redbone Coon Hunters Association. He also served as a bench show judge of coonhounds for the United States Kennel Club. He enjoyed spending time with his family, attending family functions and reunions, watching his son’s sports activities, water skiing, boating, hunting, fishing, and showing and training dogs.

Bobby is survived by his wife of 32 years, Arlene L. Jacobs, whom he married June 16, 1978; son, Brett C. Jacobs (fiancee, Annette McKinney) of Lombard, Ill.; sister, Bonnie Ellen Jacobs of Byesville; brother, Daniel R. Jacobs of Reynoldsburg; several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews and their families; his father- and mother-in-law, Archie L. and Luella Gardner of Gnadenhutten; and several close friends.

Services celebrating Bobby’s life will be held May 5, at noon, at Ourant Funeral Home, with Rev. Garry Marlatt officiating. Burial will follow in Gnaden-Clay Union Cemetery, Gnadenhutten, where the Newcomerstown Veterans’ Honor Guard will perform military graveside services. Visiting hours will be May 4, from 5-8 p.m., and one hour prior to services.
