Numbers heading in opposite directions

One number goes up, while another number goes down.

That is exactly what I had hoped for when I began WalK on Jan. 1 of this year.

As we usher out April, one third of the way through the year, my goal of walking 1,000 miles is well on target, and even more so. Since I have done so well, I have set a little higher aspirations in wanting to make it 1,200 miles to Denver, Colo. by the time we ring in 2012.

That looks well and good at this point, since I have surpassed 400 miles so far and am crushing along quite smoothly, having gotten the best of my shin splints.

My wife Ann, on the other hand, has gone far and above anything I could master, and the walker-supreme is gobbling up miles at a fantastic clip. As of May 1, she has trod 586 miles, and her goal (OK, maybe it is my goal I have thrust upon her, but I have great faith) is to make San Diego, Calif. by the new year. Once she is done teaching for the summer, I get the feeling that the miles are going to stack up really quickly for her.

As I had hoped, while the miles stack up, another number is falling, and that would be my weight. As of May 4, I have dropped 10 pounds, and haven’t put a great deal of stock into starving myself to do so.

Instead, I began eating healthier, and now, I am going to be eating more often. Sounds like a winner of an idea, doesn’t it?

From everything I have read, it is good to snack between meals, so I am putting my faith in an almond and apple snack routine between meals, which will hopefully curb my eating at meals.

While I never have expressed a goal in terms of weight loss, I would love to lose 25 pounds this year, and do it the right way, little by little, no tricks involved.

As for passing my time on the walks, I have turned to books on tape, a wonderful way to take the mind off the walking grind. To date, I think I have helped solve six murder mysteries!

What makes me as excited as anything is that at this point, I no longer dread lacing on the shoes and hitting the treadmill or going outside when it isn’t pouring down rain. Walking has actually become somewhat fun for me.

Hopefully that is the start of a new lifestyle in which exercise isn’t a foul word. Just to let you know where my wife and I stand in our efforts, there is a colorful map of the United States that shows our progress on the WalK site, so you can see where we are. Perhaps we will see Carmen Sandiego or maybe if we’re really lucky, Waldo.

God speed to all, and keep on walking along.
