Ranking second in her class, Ashley Clayton is a junior at Delaware Valley College, studying zoo science in the field of biotechnology and conservation. Matthew Clayton, a freshman at the Behrend College, Penn State University, studies mechanical engineering. Both have been extremely active in high school activities, community and church service, and athletics as well as working part time.
Three others received $500 scholarships. Kody Eckert, a senior at Dover High School, son of Kim and Steven Eckert and grandson of the late Calvin and Phyllis Eckert, plans to attend the Ohio State University to study architecture. A member of National Honor Society, the varsity soccer and tennis teams, and the high school orchestra, Eckert has found time for community volunteer service besides working at the Quaker Digital Academy.
Heather Wantland, a senior at Mt. Vernon High School, is the granddaughter of Olive Gilmore of New Philadelphia. A member of the National Honor Society, active in swimming, soccer, track, and numerous other high school organizations, Wantland has also volunteered for community service and has worked summers at the Mt. Vernon Hiawatha Pool. Not yet sure of which college she will attend, she would like to become a college history teacher.
Michael Goard, a senior at Keystone High School and a resident of Lagrange, is the near relative of four Tuscarawas County retired teachers, Lois Mizer of New Philadelphia, being his grandmother. In high school, he has been captain of the soccer team and a four year letterman in track, an active member in drama and symphonic choir, president of the tech team, and a delegate to Boys’ State. He has been a long time member and officer in 4-H as well as a volunteer for Friends of Lorain County Metro Park. At Ohio State, he plans to study agricultural engineering/construction system management.
To be eligible for these scholarships, applicants are selected according to grade averages, school and community activities, recommendations, and an essay. They must have a parent, grandparent, or first generation aunt or uncle who is a member or an active when deceased member of the Tuscarawas County Retired Teachers’ Association.
