Summer music camp at Emmanuel Lutheran Church

The annual Summer Music Camp is again being offered for children entering kindergarten through sixth grade this fall. Last summer, 75 children enjoyed a fun-filled week of music and other activities under the leadership of 30-plus adults and youth.

Each day opens with a large-group rehearsal during which the children will learn the musical 100% Chance of Rain. This is a biblical account of Noah and the ark, why God chose him, why God had to flood the earth, and of God’s wonderful promise that came out of it.

The musical has a number of small ensembles that children entering second to sixth grades may audition for.

Following the opening rehearsal, children are divided into small groups of 10 based on age. These groups rotate between five activity periods that are presented in age-appropriate ways by adult leaders. The children play choirchimes (similar to handbells), Orff instruments (xylophones, etc.), and drums, make crafts, have a Bible activity and snack.

The morning closes out with another large-group rehearsal for the older children. The youngest children may attend an activity period with musical games and activities during this time.

Local church musician Carolyn Wallace will direct the camp. Returning to this year’s staff are Donna Keller of Dover, and Bob Wallace and Barb Rupe of New Philadelphia.

The camp will take place July 25-29 (Monday through Friday), from 9 a.m. to noon, at New Philadelphia’s Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 202 East High Ave. The deadline for registration is July 12. However, enrollment is limited to the first 50 enrolled, so children are encouraged to register early. The cost is $10 per child, and $5 each for the second and third child in a family, with a maximum cost of $20 per family. A limited number of partial need-based scholarships are available.

The closing program on Friday, July 29, at 7 p.m., will feature the children as they present the musical and share other experiences they had during the week.

An offering will be collected during the week and at the closing program. It will be given to the Greater Dover-New Philadelphia Food Pantry.
