Armed Forces Day was observed May 21. As part of honoring the men and women of the armed forces, the second, pre-K and preschool children at Immaculate Conception School (ICS) in Dennison created a display at Mako’s Market. The children finished the weeklong learning with art activity by making an U.S. Flag using their handprints. As part of their art they also colored pictures and made red, white and blue flowers out of coffee filters and painted rice to fill the vases holding the flowers, adding to the display.
The students learned about the many different branches of the armed forces and shared stories of people they know who were in or are presently serving in the military. “We discussed the importance of their job, how hard it is and the risks they take. It is amazing how much they know about the different wars and the different branches of the armed forces, especially being so young,” explained Ms. Coventry, the preschool teacher at ICS. “We are very proud of all the men and women who make up our armed forces. We try to teach our students here at Immaculate Conception School about honor and respect and the military is a group of people who truly deserve both.”
