Breitenbach Wine Cellars from Dover won Best of Show for Fruit Wine with Red Raspberry. Red Raspberry is one of the winery’s 15 natural fruit wines. Fresh and sweet aromas of red raspberry juice lead into a rich, sweet red raspberry explosion of flavor; the finish goes forever and the sweetness is balanced by the natural tartness of the raspberries.
Breitenbach also won Best of Show for Dessert Wine with 4 Barrel Tawny Port. The wine was blended and fermented in newly used whiskey barrels. The wine is then aged - Solara style for six to seven years. Tasting notes for Tawny Port include a lovely orange peel and wood in the nose. There are black cherry and vanilla flavors as well as a hint of spice in the long finish.
Breitenbach 3 Berry Blend won a Concordance Gold in the Fruit Wine category. Three Berry Blend is a unique blend of strawberry, blackberry and raspberry. Three Berry Blend is only available in a 1.5 liter box. The wine is more economical and stores longer in the box than a bottle. A Concordance Gold is awarded to a wine in which all of the judges rated the wine as gold medal.
Breitenbach Merlot won a Silver medal in the competition. Merlot is not too overpowering but it does have complexity and elegance. In the nose you’ll find cherry, chocolate and nutmeg. This well-structured wine has soft tannins with modest intensity. Merlot has been a consistent medal winner in international competition.
Breitenbach Solara Cream Sherry won a Silver medal. Breitenbach Solara Cream Sherry has Niagara as the base grape. The sherry is aged in barrels in the sun. Spirits are added to bring the alcohol up. The wine is described as “caramel toffee with a rich sweet palate.” A silver medal is awarded to a wine that is extremely well crafted and shows beautiful balance and varietal character.
Breitenbach Cabernet Sauvignon and Breitenbach Apricot were each awarded Bronze medals. The definition for a bronze medal is a well-made wine that has good varietal character, quality and style.
