Tuscarawas County produces seven All-Ohioans at the State track and field meet

Fifteen boys, representing four of the nine high schools in Tuscarawas County, competed at the 104th annual Boys State Track and Field Tournament at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, on the campus of The Ohio State University, Friday June 3 and Saturday, June 4, while seven county schools were represented by 13 different athletes at the 37th annual Girls State Track and Field Tournament.

Indian Valley’s Dominic Bell became a Division II All-Ohioan in the boys pole vault with a sixth-place finish, the Braves 4 X 400-meter relay team of Ryan Simmers, Taylor Gray, Sean McKean and Kyle Johnson also achieved All-Ohio status with a sixth-place finish, and Matt Ayres of Newcomerstown finished in seventh place to become a Division III All-Ohioan in the shot put.

Over on the girls’ side, four-event State qualifier Christa D’Egidio of Dover became a Division II All-Ohioan in the 400-meter dash with a county-best fourth-place finish.

BOYS’ RESULTS BY SCHOOL

Dover

Tornadoes junior Kyle Sanborn finished 11th in the Division II 800-meter run with a time of 2:00.60.

The Tornadoes 4 X 400-meter relay team of sophomore Justin Smith, junior Travis Vance, junior Brian Ickes and Sanborn finished 13th in the DII preliminaries, with a time of 3:30.19, failing to reach the finals.

Indian Valley

Braves junior Dominic Bell became a Division II All-Ohioan in the pole vault competition, clearing 14-00.00 to finish in sixth place.

The Braves 4 X 400-meter relay team of junior Ryan Simmers, junior Taylor Gray, senior Sean McKean and junior Kyle Johnson also reached the podium in Columbus, finishing in sixth place with a time of 3:23.39.

The Braves 4 X 200-meter relay team of Simmers, Gray, McKean and Johnson failed to reach the finals, finishing 11th in the preliminaries with a time of 1:30.61.

Tuscarawas Valley

Trojans sophomore Zach Brinkman did not register an official height in the Division II high jump competition.

The Trojans 4 X 400-meter relay team of Brinkman, senior Clay Shetler, senior Clayton Patton and senior Josh Felgenhauer finished 12th in the DII preliminaries, with a time of 3:28.18, failing to reach the finals.

Newcomerstown

Trojans junior Matt Ayres became a Division III All-Ohioan in the shot put, reaching the podium in seventh place with a throw of 51-00.00.

Trojans junior Darian Arnold cleared 6-00.00 to finish 14th in the Division III high jump competition.

Arnold cleared 12-06.00 to finish 13th in the DIII pole vault competition.

Arnold also jumped 20-07.50 to finish 11th in the DIII long jump event.

GIRLS’ RESULTS BY SCHOOL

New Philadelphia

Lady Quakers junior Kaitlyn Menges finished 14th in the Division I discus throw competition, reaching 113-01.

Dover

Lady Tornadoes junior Christa D’Egidio became an All-Ohioan in the Division II 400 meter dash, taking fourth place with a time of 57.38.

D’Egidio finished 12th in the 200 meter dash with a time of 26.09.

D’Egidio also finished 10th in the DII long jump competition at 16-04.50.

The Lady Tornadoes 4 X 400-meter relay team of freshman Elizabeth Harrington, D’Egidio, sophomore Marquette Hovan and sophomore Miranda Immel crossed the line in 4:09.49 to finish 14th in the DII preliminaries, failing to reach the finals.

Indian Valley

The Lady Braves quartet of sophomore Courtney Emler, junior Courtney Oliver, sophomore Emily Probert and freshman Paige Saho finished in 15th place during the Division II preliminaries of the 4 X 800-meter relay, failing to reach the finals with a time of 9:59.70.

Tuscarawas Valley

Lady Trojans sophomore Jordyn Koch finished 10th place in the Division II 1,600 meter run, crossing the line at the 5:21.83 mark.

Garaway

Lady Pirates freshman Karissa Swihart finished 16th in the Division III shot put competition with a throw of 34-03.00.

Newcomerstown

Lady Trojans sophomore Cydney McMillan finished 13th in the Division III pole vault competition after clearing 10-06.00.

Tuscarawas Central Catholic

Lady Saints senior Becky Russell finished 13th in the Division III high jump competition after clearing 5-00.00.
