OSU alumni award $7,000 in scholarships

Seven recent area high school graduates - Trevor Petitte, David Walton, Keelie Bente, Lyndsey McMath, Katherine (Essie) Snead, Taylor Moreland, and Emily Bitticker - have received $1,000 Ohio State University alumni scholarships. All will attend OSU in the fall.

Petitte was selected by the OSU Alumni Club of Tuscarawas County as a recipient of a Tuscarawas County Endowment Scholarship for the 2011-2012 school year. A son of Dan and the late Pattie Petitte, he will study music education. Ken Engstrom, representing the Alumni Club, presented the award. At Garaway High School, Petitte was involved in band, Spanish Club, and National Honor Society. The merit-based award is presented to students recommended by the scholarship committee of the county OSU Alumni Club.

The club also awarded an endowment award to David Walton, a son of Dave and Laurie Walton. A graduate of Tuscarawas Valley High and Buckeye Career Center, he was involved in FFA, baseball and basketball. He also was involved in 4-H and the Tuscarawas County Junior Fair Board. Walton plans to major in dairy cattle production and management at The Ohio State University Agricultural Technical Institute at Wooster. Chris Kendle presented the award to Walton at the FFA banquet at Buckeye Career Center.

Bente and McMath of Claymont and Moreland, and Snead of New Philadelphia, are the recipients of the fourth annual Molly B. Demuth Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship was established through the county OSU Alumni Club by Demuth’s family and friends to aid county students who plan to attend Ohio State.

Bente, daughter of Kelly and Melissa Bente, is a Claymont High graduate and was involved in cheerleading, National Honor Society, Student Council, and Mock Trial as well as Right to Read, American Cancer Society, and Lifeshare Blood Drive in the community. Bente plans to pursue a degree in accounting. Jim Demuth presented the award.

McMath, daughter of Darrell and the late Lee Ann McMath, was involved in Claymont High’s cross country, National Honor Society, and Student Council as well as Lifeshare Blood Drive and Vacation Bible School. McMath plans to pursue a degree in medical technology specializing in oncology. Jim Demuth presented the award.

At New Philadelphia High, Moreland, daughter of Dave and Kris Moreland, was involved in Student Council, French Club, Science Club, Key Club, Delphian Chorale, QT Dance Team, basketball, track, Renaissance Club, and National Honor Society as well as Hospice and Share-A-Christmas. Moreland plans to pursue a degree in biology minoring in psychology and French. Elizabeth Stephenson presented the award.

Stephenson also recognized Snead, daughter of Harry and Sheila Snead. Snead is a New Philadelphia High graduate and was involved in Student Council, QT dance team, French Club, Key Club, Yearbook, and National Honor Society as well as Reach Workcamps, Share-A-Christmas, the homeless shelter and an Upward Sports Cheerleading Coach. She plans to pursue a degree in international business management.

Karen Stokey presented the first annual Timothy and Karen Stokey Family Scholarship to Bitticker, daughter of Thomas and Hannah Bitticker. The award provides scholarships for first-year undergraduate students enrolled at the Columbus campus who are graduates from Dover High School in Dover, and who have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. The scholarship is renewable up to one year provided the student maintains a 2.8 GPA. Bitticker was in involved in orchestra, and National Honor Society as well as “Camp Imagine If,” volunteering at the food pantry, and an English as a Second Language volunteer. She plans to major in chemistry with a focus on pre-medical studies.
