July 15, 16, and 17 are the dates of this year’s St. Joseph Church festival in Dover. “This weekend event draws crowds from all over the community, not just St. Joe’s parishioners,” said Andrea and Lou Settimio, chairpersons for the festival. “We like to think of it as a community party.”

What makes the event so successful is, first of all, good weather; secondly, consistently good food; and especially, good entertainment. Friday night will feature a Swiss steak dinner in the Tuscarawas Central Catholic Elementary School cafeteria on Tuscarawas Avenue, just across the street from the church. Jenny Warner and her crew will be making the Swiss steak, mashed potatoes, and corn, complemented by homemade desserts, rolls, and drinks.

The entertainment on Friday night will include CD music, a Tribute to the Oldies Show by Todd T. Taylor, and the band La Flavour for dancing. For the kids, there will be inflatables, kids games, miniature golf, and cornhole. For the adults, there will be plenty of cold beverages, including fresh-squeezed lemonade, as well as games of chance and cornhole. All the outside festivities begin at 5 p.m.

On Saturday, there will be a Festival Mass at 4 p.m, followed by the Taste of Italy dinner at 5 p.m., also in the school cafeteria. The dinner will feature Italian foods from Pangrazios Pizza & Spaghetti House, Carbone’s Italian Restaurant, Chef Ernie’s, The Manor, and Gary’s Italian Deli. Litty’s Cakes and Cookies will provide cake, and there will be plenty of other baked desserts from which to choose. The entertainment on Saturday will feature CD music at 7 p.m. and Retrovox at 8 p.m.

Sunday’s festivities begin earlier with a barbecued half-chicken dinner with baked potato and cole slaw beginning at 11 a.m. and continuing until the chicken is gone. That usually occurs in the early afternoon, so it’s best to not procrastinate. There will be a Spanish/English Mass for the entire community at 3 p.m. Beginning at 4 p.m, the food booths will open selling St. Joe’s famous sausage sandwiches with onions, green and hot peppers, hamburgers, hotdogs, creamed chicken sandwiches, hand-cut French fries, pizza, cold drinks, ice cream, cookies, waffles, and chips and salsa. For the kids (of all ages) there will be snow cones, cotton candy and popcorn. One of the most anticipated booths of the festival is the Ladies Fancy Booth, located at the school entrance and showcasing the work of women in the parish with artistic and creative abilities. A handmade quilt raffle is a highlight of the booth and tickets for it may be purchased at the booth. The festival raffle this year will feature a $2,000 first prize, an iPad 2, a 32-inch flat screen TV, $500, iPod, Kindle 3G, Kindle with cover, Warther knives, a $100 gift certificate for Robert’s Mens Shop, a $100 gift certificate for

Molly’s Runway Rags, and a $50 gift certificate for Giuseppe’s Restaurant. Tickets can be purchased from any parishioner or at the festival. The raffle will be held Sunday night at 9 p.m. Sunday’s entertainment will include Brandi Lynn at 5 p.m, followed by Backstage Dancers, and Take Three.
