Seven decades of community volunteer service has resulted in national recognition for Ladea “Penny” Zurcher of Dover. A Congressional Proclamation honoring her was recently presented at a gathering of her family and friends at Union Country Club.

“Penny Zurcher has exhibited the dedication of service to others that has defined her life by going above and beyond what a volunteer truly is,” said Darrell Kick, field representative for Congressman Bob Gibbs. Kick presented the proclamation to Zurcher on behalf of Gibbs.

In June, Zurcher was named the recipient of the 2011 Lucille Nussdorfer Woman of the Year award recognizing her work with community organizations like Sacred Heart Church, Girl Scouts, Lady Elks, the Union Hospital Auxiliary, and several other organizations.

“I feel so overwhelmed with all this attention,” said Zurcher. “I love people and love the opportunity to lend a helping hand,” she said. “I just think it makes the world a better place.”

“Penny has given so much to so many,” said Phyllis Markworth of New Philadelphia, Union Hospital Auxiliary president. “Her dedication has bettered our community, and I am a better person for knowing her.”
