New this year will be a Scholastic Book Fair set up on the stage, sponsored by the Port Washington PTO. Books will be available for purchase, and proceeds will support various activities at Port Washington.
The Back to School Fair will give parents and youngsters the opportunity to obtain school information as well as needed supplies and services for the new academic year. All items and services will be free of charge and are only available to those who attend the morning event.
Kindergarten students will receive free book bags while first and second graders can pick up complimentary school supply kits. In addition, there will be lice checks and optional haircuts along with hearing and vision screenings. Information on dental health will also be available.
Healthy snacks will be offered in the cafeteria. Look for class lists to be posted in the hallways. Students will be able to get oriented to the “big yellow school bus” just outside the cafeteria doors. Also, the gym will feature more than 20 community service agencies distributing information on their services. A few of the agencies represented will be Safe Kids Coalition, Tuscarawas County Job and Family Services, Big Brothers Big Sisters, American Red Cross, Fit Youth Initiative and Super Fitness. A table will be set up for anyone to pick up information about the Indian Valley Foundation, which exists to raise funds from individuals, corporations and foundations to promote increased classroom learning and exemplary teaching in all Indian Valley Schools.
Ira Wentworth, Midvale principal, and Jim Kennedy, Port Washington principal, will share emergency dismissal procedures, dress code guidelines and other details. They will also be handing out refrigerator magnets featuring the school calendar. Title teachers, librarians and the computer instructor will share educational websites, reading tips and more at the “Get Ready to Learn!” station in the library and computer lab.
For those coming to the Back to School Fair, use the front entrance only and register at the tables in the cafeteria. On-site registration of new students, with proper paperwork, will be completed in the office by the school secretaries. Each child’s parent or guardian will receive a card with spaces to fill in with stickers that may be obtained at each of the activity areas. The completed card can be exchanged for the free book bag or supply kits. Only those attending the Back to School Fair and visiting all the stations will be given book bags or school supply kits. Cards will be placed into door prize boxes. Door prizes will be awarded shortly after the school year begins.
Generous donations from the Port Washington PTO, Midvale PTO, OAPSE, Local 474 and several area businesses are helping to support this year’s event.
