Sayre and Smith to head fall fundraising campaign for United Way

Allan Sayre

The United Way of Tuscarawas County will conduct its fall fundraising campaign under the leadership of two well-known area residents. Allan Sayre, the Tuscarawas County deputy auditor, has agreed to assume the role of campaign chair this year. Robert Smith, owner and president of both Smith-Varns Funeral Home and Smith Ambulance Service, Inc. in Dover will serve as the assistant campaign chair.

Sayre and Smith will lead a team of nearly 30 volunteers with the goal of raising $575,000 to support area health and human services. According to Sayre, “Our local United Way has historically received a tremendous amount of support from the community. Once again we will be asking both individuals and businesses alike to dig deep to help make a difference in the lives of their friends and neighbors.”

Sayre, a lifelong resident of Tuscarawas County, resides in Dover with his wife, Stephanie, and their two children, Jilaine and Alec. Prior to his position as deputy auditor, Sayre served in the Ohio House of Representatives. He is also a state licensed real estate appraiser. Sayre is currently a board member of the American Red Cross, a member of the Dover Kiwanis, Tuscarawas County Farm Bureau, the Dover Historical Society, and Tuscarawas County Center for the Arts.

Bob Smith resides near Winfield and has a son, Bobby (Shawna) Smith of New Philadelphia, a daughter, Kelli (Mike) Mossor of Dover, and four grandchildren, Zachary and Jarett Smith and Emily and Andy Mossor.

Smith is a graduate of both Dover High School and the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. He is licensed as both a funeral director and embalmer. Smith, also a paramedic, has more than 40 years experience in ambulance and funeral service. He is a member of the Sugarcreek Lions Club and the Bolivar-Zoar Rotary Club and serves as secretary-treasurer of the Tri County Funeral Directors Association.

Last year, United Way successfully raised more than $578,000 under the leadership of Mark Waltz, owner of Waltz Appraisal Services of Dover. Although the economy is still tough for many, Sayre and Smith are dedicated to reaching this year’s goal as well.

“With so much uncertainty in today’s world, it is so important that Tuscarawas County residents know that United Way is going to be there to help them with the programs and services that are needed,” Sayre said.

“The United Way is very excited and looking forward to working with both Allan and Bob, two lifelong residents that care deeply about our community,” said Fred Weingarth, vice president with the United Way. The United Way campaign will officially begin later this month.
