Greco Band to perform at Italian-American Festival

From high about Third Street in Dover, the Dominic Greco Band filled the area in front of the stage, as hundreds of audience members surrounded them for the Music of Italy concert during the Tuscarawas County Italian-American Festival in 2009. Last year, the band performed from Memorial Hall due to inclement weather.

The Dominic Greco Concert Band, under the direction of Frederick Delphia will present Music of Italy in a performance at the Tuscarawas County Italian-American Festival in downtown Dover.

The concert is scheduled for Saturday, August 13, beginning at 7 p.m. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be held at Memorial Hall in Dover.

Delphia stated the concert’s main theme will complement the annual Italian festival. “Though not all selections will have an Italian flavor, they will keep with the spirit of this wonderful festival,” he said.

The audience will get a taste of overtures, opera music, and Italian folk songs along with vocal and instrumental solos. Many well-known numbers associated with the Italian musical heritage will headline this program.

The concert will begin with March Virtuoso, followed by Rossini’s Tancredi Overture, and will include several features from the big band era.

Solos were often featured on concerts presented by the Italian Band when it was under the direction of the late conductor, Dominic Greco. Trumpeter Jeff Huston will step forward to present the spectacular, Grand Russian Fantasy.

Popular local vocalist, Ron Barkett will take center stage with his special interpretation of Corey Swinderman’s arrangement of favorite Italian street songs, and Ron Geese’s arrangement of Mambo Italiano.

Following her recent appearance with Josh Groban, talented vocalist Laura Schupbach will join the band for three numbers showing her great versatility as a singer.

Also sure to be an audience favorite will be the band’s take on The Andrews Sisters’ Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B.

“We always enjoy playing at the Tuscarawas County Italian-American Festival and we look forward to this year’s performance,” Delphia explained. “This event has special meaning to the band members since the Dominic Greco Band was originally called the Italian Band when it was formed in 1917. It will be an enjoyable evening of fine concert band music.”
