Marie was born Dec. 3, 1920, in Millersburg, to the late William and Tillie Straits. She was a 1938 graduate of Millersburg High School. During the war, she worked for Hoover Industries, North Canton, where she was an administrative assistant to the president of the company. After the war, she worked as a court reporter for the Holmes County Court of Common Pleas. In 1960, she worked as a court reporter for Tuscarawas County Court of Common Pleas, retiring in 1990. She enjoyed working as a tour guide at the Victorian House and was involved in the Holmes County Historical Society. She volunteered as a poll worker and also for the blood mobile.
Marie was on several golf leagues at Briar Hill and played in several bridge clubs. She enjoyed reading, knitting, and traveled extensively, and was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Millersburg.
Surviving are a son, Thomas (Kathleen) Hardin of New Philadelphia; daughter, Ann Patricia Hardin of West Lafayette; two grandchildren, Megan Hardin of Cleveland and Brendan Hardin of New Philadelphia; sister, Marcella (Don) Kaser of Millersburg; and three special nieces, Connie McMichael of Wooster, and Mary and Bonnie Gallion, both of Killbuck.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Hardin; sister, Pauline Straits; and brothers, John Straits, who was killed in WWII, and Francis Straits.
Services will be held August 8, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Millersburg, with Father Stephen L. Krile officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Millersburg. Friends may call August 7, from 1-3 p.m., at Alexander Funeral Home, Millersburg.
