On August 2, at the monthly meeting of the Tuscarawas County American Legion Council, hosted at the New Philadelphia American Legion Post 139, Ann Swinderman, of Dover, was added to this prestigious list of winners.
Swinderman is not a veteran, but is “very much a veteran advocate. She does come from a long line of veterans and is married to one,” stated District 10 Commander Charles J. Strizak during the presentation of the award.
Strizak added that Swinderman’s dedication on the Tuscarawas County Memorial Stone Committee is just one example of her veterans’ advocacy work to honor the area’s veterans and their sacrifices.
“It is such an honor to receive this award. I am humbled to even be considered. My grandfather, the late Alvin Lengler, was very active in veterans’ groups and I attribute my desire to help veterans to him,” Swinderman stated. “I am not a veteran, but I believe the least I can do is support these great men and women in any way I can. I am truly thankful for what they have done and continue to do for all of us.”
Jim Kneubuehl, a Dover American Legion member, nominated Swinderman for the award, stating that she is “willing to work and assist the community and the veterans. We are so very lucky to have Ann Swinderman supporting our veteran community.”
Swinderman is the managing editor of Graphic Publications, which includes The Bargain Hunters in Tuscarawas, Holmes and Wayne counties, The Holmes County Journal, Wooster Weekly News, Ohio’s Amish Country and Ohio’s River Country. She is also active in the Dover Band Boosters, serving as president of the group.
