“This is always a tough time because we have the beginning of school, sometimes things can be a little hectic,” said Hiland coach Scott Bodiker. “This was a good start for us. With a majority of our kids being juniors with no varsity experience, it was nice to get the nerves out in a game like this. We’ve got a number of guys who are fairly even right now, and are competing for playing time, so it’s nice to get a chance to see what they can do in meaningful action.”
Hiland dominated time of possession from the beginning, and the score was indicative of that.
After a barrage of early opportunities slipped by without a goal, including Cameron Miller’s header off the top bar, Grant Stutzman did get things rolling by finding the back of the net for a 1-0 lead eight minutes into the contest. Forty seconds later Stutzman found Miller in front of the goal, and he knocked one home for a 2-0 lead.
After Tusky Valley produced its own goal to make it 3-0, the Hawks were shut down until three minutes left in the first half, when Cameron Stutzman curled a pass under two defenders and found Lukas Burch, who drove home a shot to make it 4-0.
If the Trojans had thoughts of turning things around in the second half, they were quickly put to bed when Cameron Stutzman found the back of the net just 45 seconds into the half. Forty seconds later Neil Mast lifted a long pass by several defenders to Christian Joy, who maneuvered around a defender and fired a shot into the upper 90 left side for a 6-0 lead.
The Hawks got two more goals, the first from Miller who rebounded a Cameron Stutzman shot and dropped it in for his second score, and Grant Stutzman, who beat the Tusky Valley defense to round out the scoring. The lone goal for the Trojans came when Dan Aukerman made a nifty header by goalie Dylan Kaufman.
“You always want to get the shutout, but that was a bit of a fluky situation where Dylan had come out to get a ball and it got cleared before he could grab it,” said Bodiker. “He was a little out of position and the ball got sent back in again, but really, the kid made a pretty good effort in getting it in the net.”
The Hawks outshot the Trojans 23-54, and had seven corners to Tusky Valley’s one.
The big win made it tough for Bodiker to gauge his team’s performance, but the fact that he was able to run 24 players out onto the field to gain some much needed experience was a real plus.
“Nobody really stood out, but it is tough to see that kind of thing in a game like this,” said Bodiker. “We’ll find out more as we go along, but it sure was nice to get a lot of kids playing time this early in the season.”
