A son of the late Robert E. and Mary M. Shackelford, Bob was born March 26, 1946, in Marion. He was a graduate of Marion Harding High School and completed formal his education at Wittenberg University, where he earned his degree in business.
While attending Wittenberg, Bob played center for the college football team and was a member during the 1964 season in which the Tigers became the Division 3 National Champions. He also met and fell in love with a young lady named Susan Heck and the couple married on Sept. 5, 1970; together, they shared 40 years of marriage and become parents to three sons.
Bob started his working career with the Sears Roebuck Company and held numerous managerial positions with the firm throughout the state prior to settling in the Tuscarawas Valley. In 1977, he purchased the franchising rights to The Big Red Q Quickprint Center and later made the company the independent firm it is today. He also established The Typesetters, New Philadelphia, and during the early part of the decade brought his youngest son, Todd, into the business to work alongside him.
Those who knew Bob best were aware of his many unique personality traits which ranged from his dry sense of humor that would often open a window and give way to an opportunity for him to get into trouble. Perhaps some knew of the way he viewed others with the ability to look past their imperfections and find the good which surrounded them. Others, however, may have known him for his down to earth mannerisms. Above all, Bob loved to help those in need and provided what he could when asked to lend a hand. His family knew Bob as in individual who proved he knew unconditional love and showed it to each of them time and time again.
Throughout his years in New Philadelphia, Bob had previously served as a member of the church council for Emmanuel Lutheran Church and had been an active supporter of numerous clubs and organizations which included the New Philadelphia Lions Club, where he had served as the club’s president, the New Philadelphia Quaker Club, Elks Lodge BPOE 510, the New Philadelphia Downtown Merchants Association, the Tuscarawas County YMCA Board of Directors, the Tuscarawas County Chamber of Commerce, the New Philadelphia Planning Commission, and the Zoning Board.
As a businessman, Bob and his staff at the Quickprint Center have been one of the longest standing sponsors of the New Philadelphia youth league baseball teams and were honored to have been recognized by this year’s Quickprint sponsored team.
During his free time, Bob was an avid golfer who also enjoyed charter fishing and taking full advantage of any opportunity to spend time with his family. When not following golf, Bob could also be found cheering on the Cleveland sports teams, the Browns, Cavaliers, and the Indians, as well as sporting events of The Ohio State University.
Additionally, Bob looked forward to taking his son, Todd, to lunch at the New Philadelphia Elks Lodge, where a regular group of gentleman spanning a number of generations joined together and shared stories and life experiences.
In addition to his wife, Sue, survivors include his sons, Robert Cade Shackelford and Jay Brandon Shackelford, both of Cleveland, and Todd Alan Shackelford of the home; sister, Sharon Shackelford of Westerville; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Robert Eugene Shackelford Jr.
