C. James McCune

Charles James “Jim” McCune, 61, of Port Washington, died Sept. 1, 2011, at his residence, following a one-year struggle with cancer.

Jim was born Sept. 26, 1949, in Cambridge, to the late Charles H. “Chuck” and A. Ruth McCune. He was a graduate of Port Washington High School, class of 1967, the last graduating class at Port Washington before the Indian Valley South consolidation. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and served during the Vietnam War. He was a Baptist by faith and was a retired shipping clerk with the former Alsco Company, Gnadenhutten, where he worked for 26 years.

Jim was a member of the LOOM 740 (Uhrichsville Moose Lodge) and participated in the bowling leagues at Cy Young Lanes, Newcomerstown, and the golf leagues at Big Bend Golf Course, Uhrichsville. He also enjoyed baseball in Port Washington and as a member of the Newcomerstown Merchants Class A team. He had a couple of tryouts with the Kansas City Royals baseball team in his younger years. Jim was a big sports fan, following the Cleveland Indians, Browns, and Cavaliers for all his life. He also enjoyed many activities, including cornhole, horse shoes, and Wii bowling, and enjoyed working with statistics and numbers, especially in the field of sporting events. He was known by all his family and friends as having a kind heart when it came to helping others. He was also known for his quick wit and his wonderful sense of humor that he displayed, even in the last weeks of his life.

Jim is survived by children, Connie Jo McCune of Dover, Amy Jo (Jim) Collins of Bolivar, and James Edward “Jim” (Kim) McCune of Beach City; grandchildren, Madison Jolynn Vandine of Dover, and Jimmy, William, and Emmett Collins, all of Bolivar; siblings, Mary Ann (R. Craig) Wilkin of Newcomerstown, Jeanie M. (Timothy D.) Stokes of Coshocton, and Richard A. (Mary E.) McCune of Port Washington; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Graveside services and burial will be held Sept. 6, at 1 p.m., in Salem-Union Cemetery, Port Washington, with Pastor Rita C. Myers officiating. Military graveside services will be performed by the Newcomerstown Veterans’ Honor Guard. To honor Jim’s requests, there will be no visiting hours observed.
