Arthur Heidenreich

Arthur Carl Heidenreich, 88, a longtime resident of New Philadelphia, died August 31, 2011, at Country Club Retirement Center, Dover, following a lengthy illness.

Born July 2, 1923, in Cleveland, Art was the son of the late Clifford and Clara Heidenreich. He was a 1941 graduate of West Technical High School, Cleveland, and attended Fenn College. He retired as the general manager of Joy Manufacturing in 1986 and had previously worked with the Warner & Swasey Company for 30 years and with Kysor Industrial Corporation. Art also helped bring Gradall to New Philadelphia in 1950.

Art was a sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII, a life member of VFW Carl C. Stoller Post 1445, and a past member of the American Legion.

As an active community leader, Art was proud to have served as the chairman of the advisory committee to bring the Kent State University branch campus to Tuscarawas County and serving as the master of ceremony at the university’s groundbreaking. He was a member of First United Church of Christ, New Philadelphia, the New Philadelphia Elks, the Atwood Yacht Club, and a volunteer with Hospice of Tuscarawas County. He was formerly active with the Union Hospital board of trustees, New Philadelphia Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, and was the United Fund Campaign chairman from 1967-68.

Art is survived by sons, Tom (Diana) Heidenreich and Jerry (Kathy) Heidenreich, both of New Philadelphia, and Robert (Laura) Heidenreich of Mesa, Ariz.; grandsons, Michael Heidenreich of Akron, Trevor Heidenreich of California, Brian Heidenreich of South Carolina, and Travis Heidenreich of Texas; stepgrandchildren, Jennifer and Adam Smith of Florida; ex-daughter-in-law, Lynne Sanderson of New Philadelphia, with whom he maintained a special relationship; sisters-in-law, Doris Meese of Sugarcreek and Norma Heidenreich of Chino Hills, Calif.; and great-grandchildren, Abigail, Sophia, Genevieve, Brady, Carly Faith, and Kurtis.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Mildred Meese; brother, Clifford Heidenreich; stepdaughter, Karen Murphy; stepson, Douglas Smith; sister-in-law, Ruth Meese; and stepgranddaughter, Ann Murphy.

In accordance with Art’s wishes, his body will be cremated and there will be no viewing. Memorial services will be held Sept. 8, at 10:30 a.m., at Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory, New Philadelphia, with Pastor Jeff Gerber officiating. Inurnment will follow in Evergreen Burial Park, New Philadelphia, where the New Philadelphia VFW will perform military honors. A memorial reception will be held in the Geib Family Center following the committal.
