Julia Dugan

Julia Rebecca Dugan, 98, of New Philadelphia, died peacefully Sept. 14, 2011, at Union Hospital, Dover, following a period of declining health.

A daughter of the late Charles H. and Maggie Dugan, Julia was born Dec. 22, 1912, in Uhrichsville. She attended the former Goshen School and married the love of her life, George Gilbert Dugan, on March 22, 1928. Julia and George had four children and celebrated 51 years of marriage prior to his passing in 1979.

For a handful of years, Julia worked outside the home to help support her family and held positions with the former Puritan Laundry and Alex’s Restaurant, New Philadelphia. She also provided in-home care for elderly friends for a number of years as well.

Julia was a life member of the Church of Christ, New Philadelphia. Never able to sit for long, she was often found tending to her vegetable garden and harvesting its crops, which she in turn preserved and canned for the winter months. Never did anyone leave hungry if they stopped to visit or share in one of her famous Sunday afternoon family meals; she always ensured everyone was well nourished. She also enjoyed baking and sharing homemade pies with her family and friends as well as sharing her green thumb with her flower gardens and house plants.

Julia leaves behind five generations of family members which include her children, Jerry (Mary) Dugan and Dorothy Eichel, both of New Philadelphia; 14 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; two great-great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by brothers, Ray and Roy Wharton; sister, Ethel Vandine; infant son, Charles Dugan; daughter, Doris Dugan; a grandchild; four great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Services celebrating Julia’s life were held Sept. 16, at Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory, New Philadelphia, with Tim Hatfield officiating. Burial was in East Avenue Cemetery, New Philadelphia.

Those wishing to do so may send the family personal condolences by signing her online registry at http://www.geibcares.com.

Family requests memorial contributions in Julia’s name be directed to the Church of Christ, 749 Commercial Ave. SW, New Philadelphia 44663; or Community Hospice, 201 W. Third St., Dover 44622.
