Mark’s Place to host benefit run Oct. 9 at Schoenbrunn Village

Registration is now open for the first Healthy is Beautiful 10K run/walk event to benefit Movers & Shakers Against Parkinson’s Disease, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to raising money for Parkinson’s research and assisting needy Tuscarawas County Parkinson’s patients with medical bills. Hosted by Mark’s Place Salon & Spa, the run/walk event will take place at Schoenbrunn Village State Memorial (located behind Harry Clever Airfield) at New Philadelphia on Sunday, Oct. 9, at 3 p.m.

Healthy is Beautiful will include activities for people of all ages and ability levels to enjoy. Athletes will love the challenge of the 10K (6.2 miles) run, 10K relay, 10K walk or 10K two-person relay. Families, children, seniors and disabled individuals can participate in the one mile walk/roll, an event category unique to this fundraiser. “We are encouraging everyone to come out and participate in this event,” explained Mark Luikart, owner of Mark’s Place. “Parkinson’s patients and even wheelchair participants are welcome to attend. We want to help those who need a wheelchair push in the one mile walk/roll.”

Parkinson’s patients, wheelchair participants and children age 10 and younger can participate in the event at no charge. Registration for all others is $27.50 a person through Oct. 8, and $35 for those who register on the day of the event. All participants will be timed by the Ohio Challenge Series and receive a race number valid for $20 in products or services at Mark’s Place Salon & Spa. Advance registration is available through Oct. 5 online at http://www.ohiochallengeseries.com or through Oct. 8 at Mark’s Place, 715 Cookson Ave. SE, New Philadelphia. Wheelchair participants who would like assistance at the event can call Luikart at 330-541-5469 for more information.

Participants can pick up event packets at Mark’s Place between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7 or between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8. Packets can also be picked up between 1 and 2:30 p.m. at the event Oct. 9.

“We are so thankful to Mark and his staff at Mark’s Place for sponsoring this event to benefit the Movers & Shakers Against Parkinson’s Disease,” shared Chris Hasseman, president of the nonprofit group. “All of the proceeds will be used by our group to help those affected by Parkinson’s disease in Tuscarawas County. What better way to support this cause than by getting out and moving to take action against this devastating disease?”

According to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, as many as one million Americans live with Parkinson’s disease, and approximately 60,000 Americans are diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease each year (not including the thousands of cases that go undetected). Medication costs for an individual person with Parkinson’s disease average $2,500 per year.
