James Campbell

James E. Campbell, 86, of New Philadelphia, died Sept. 19, 2011, at Aultman Hospital, Canton, following a sudden illness.

A son of the late Edmund and Mary Alice Campbell, James was born June 22, 1925, in Uhrichsville. He graduated from Uhrichsville High School in 1943 and later graduated from Ohio Northern University, Ada, with a bachelor’s degree in science of pharmacology. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving as a staff sergeant during World War II as a ball turret gunner on board B-17 aircraft.

James was a co-owner and pharmacist at the former Campbell and Smith Pharmacy and the H&A Drug, both at Uhrichsville. He then retired in 1988 from Peoples Drug Store, Uhrichsville. Following his retirement, he continued to work with various local pharmacies.

James was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church, Uhrichsville, a longtime past president of the board of directors for Twin City Hospital, Dennison, and was also a member of the 96th Bomb Group Association and the 8th Air Force Historical Society. He also enjoyed traveling, especially to Air Force reunions.

James is survived by his wife, Ruth Wiggins-Campbell, whom he married Sept. 17, 2007; children, Connie (Jess) Henary of New Philadelphia, Gail (Bill) Patterson of Norwalk, and Jim (Lisa) Campbell of New Philadelphia; grandchildren, Jesse (Laura) Henary, Kim (Chris) Fountain, Ryan (Lori) Henary, Bill Patterson, Heather (Rod) Wurts, Aric (Kate) Campbell, Lindsay (Josh) Adam, and Eric and Chris Schlarb; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Campbell; and brother, Richard Campbell.

In keeping with James’s wishes, cremation will take place through the care of Geib’s Tuscarawas Valley Crematory, Dover. Memorial services celebrating James’s life were held Sept. 21, at Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory, New Philadelphia, with Rev. Hugh Berry officiating.
