Clayton was born August 25, 1930, in Jackson County, W.Va., to the late Clifton H. and Lena A. Hewitt. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean conflict and retired from Ohio Edison in 1972. He also worked for 3M Drilling and owned and operated Hewitt Appliance, Mt. Eaton, for many years. He served on the board of public affairs for the village of Mt. Eaton for many years and currently served as the sexton for West Lawn Cemetery, Mt. Eaton. He attended Mt. Eaton Community Church.
Surviving are his wife, Rita Hewitt, whom he married May 14, 2011; children, Keith (Debbie) Hewitt of Fredericksburg, and Craig (Nancy) Hewitt, Kenny (Diana) Hewitt, and Denise Reser, all of Mt. Eaton; stepchildren, Sheila (Robert) Klein of Columbus, Randy (Jill) Smith of London, and Craig (Karen) Smith of Thornville; 11 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; sisters, Violet Snyder of Mt. Eaton, Audrey (Harold) Conkle of Sugarcreek, and Gloria (Michael) Winkler and Sharon Hewitt, both of Mt. Eaton; and brothers, Rodney (Coleen) Hewitt of Kidron and Gordon (Bonnie) Hewitt of Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Maxine M. Hewitt, whom he married May 19, 1951; and brother, Curtis.
Memorial services will be held Oct. 15, at 2 p.m., at Mt. Eaton Community Church, with Pastor Jeff Matthews officiating. Following his wishes, cremation has taken place.
