The East Holmes School District’s 3.82 mill levy for a period of five years to further pay for emergency requirements as needed in the school district will be on the Nov. 8 ballot. It is imperative to see how the district’s educational efforts, and the tax money which is provided to help meet educational needs, plays an important role in the continued success of Holmes County.
Over the next few weeks in The Holmes County Journal and The Bargain Hunter, we will see how East Holmes School District has played a vital role in the lives of some of its former students, who continue call Holmes County their home.

What possible reason could a retired doctor and his wife have for voting for a school levy, considering that it has been long past that they would have had children in the East Holmes School District?
Dr. Dan Miller and his wife Mary recognize the value they have seen over the years which the school district offered both their youth, their grandchildren and the numerous youth who have come through the system, and see their tax money as a way to invest in their community and the future leaders within the district.
“We appreciate keeping our takes with a vital, local investment in our grandchildren and our youth,” said Dr. Miller. “East Holmes provides a good education in a safe environment, and it is a vital asset to local businesses, community involvement and church participation. We want our grandchildren and other youth to have the same experiences, education and safe environment similar to that of our children and ourselves.”
Dr. Miller noted that while East Holmes Schools throughout the district provide ample opportunity to learn the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic, it is also a tool for preparing them for the more practical stages of life, which, said Dr. Miller, is what employers are seeking today.
Dr. Miller believes that the educational system in East Holmes School District is preparing students who attend college with basic skills and provides a work ethic that goes above and beyond what most teens experience.
That work ethic, experience and knowledge will often times come right back to Holmes County, where many East Holmes graduates return to raise families of their own.
As for the role East Holmes schools play in the community, Dr. Miller said providing a quality education for today’s youth has ramifications that extend far beyond education.
“East Holmes Schools play a huge role in contributing to the values of family, church and community,” said Dr. Miller. “Keeping these entities involved in school activities have long term benefits.”
