Steady performances highlight Eastern District cross country girls meet

Tusky Valley’s Jordan Koch found herself running alone in third place for much of the race. Koch’s effort was one of the main reasons the Lady Trojans earned a third-place finish at the Eastern District Div. II girls cross country meet.

Wow, once these girls get something in their head, it stays there.

Tusky Valley’s Jordan Koch settled into third place early on in the Eastern District Div. II cross country meet held at Cambridge High School on Saturday, Oct. 22, and that is exactly where she finished the race.

Dover’s Brooke Kinsey found her way to fifth place midway through the contest, and there she remained, steadfast. Her teammate, Katherine Lehman, plunked herself in line one spot behind Kinsey, and was rock solid all day long, finishing right behind her teammate.

Those performances led to both Tusky Valley and Dover advancing to the Regional competition, along with Claymont, which earned the coveted fourth spot to advance as the final entry. All three schools trailed Minerva’s Kaele Lightfoot, who proved to live up to her name by treading lightly over the muck and mud the course offered on race day, to a scintillating time of 19:09, simply far and away the best time of the race.

Koch cruised home at 19:54, and exhibited strong stamina throughout the race. She was joined by teammates senior Shanna Skirtich (10th/21:03), freshman Gabbi Tausch (13th/21:24) and junior Kristen Kubina (15th/21:42), as the Lady clocked in at 20:21 while Lehman crossed the finish line in 20:31. Freshman Megan Foltz came in 17th at 21:44, junior Jesse Stallings earned a 19th place finish in 21:49, Elizabeth Harrington, a sophomore, came in 24th with a time of 22:33 and junior Miranda Immel came home 31st in 23:02.

While it didn’t have the top-tier runner on the day like some schools, Claymont did get an incredible team effort, with the entire seven-member team coming in between eighth and 29th.

Leading the way for Uhrichsville was freshman Courtney Sowers (8th/21:00), followed by junior Sierra Swigert (11th/21:18.95), freshman Pauline Fisher (18th/21:47), freshman Jacklyn Burdette (21st/21:55), freshman Destinie Devore (27th/22:45), and juniors Lindsay Long (28th/22:54) and Cierra Bloom (29th/22:56).

Following Lightfoot home was Carrollton senior Kelsey Cogan, who timed in at 19:35.
