Information about treatment of enlarged prostate

Dr. Michael Gigax

Enlarged prostate, also known as BPH, is one of the most common medical conditions in men over age 50. Dr. Michael Gigax, of Dover, a urologist on staff at Union Hospital (UH), will present a program on the topic of Cooled ThermoTherapy, a different approach to the treatment of BPH.

Cooled ThermoTherapy is a non-surgical procedure that can provide long-term relief from the symptoms of enlarged prostate not related to cancer. The condition has traditionally been treated with either medications or surgery.

This Take Charge of Your Health program is sponsored by the UH department of community health and wellness. Dr. Gigax’s program will take place Tuesday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m., in the Union Hospital Rosenberry Conference Room. The program is free but seating is limited. Register by calling the UH department of development and community relations at 330-602-0778. Register online at http://www.unionhospital.org and click on the Health Events button.

Cooled ThermoTherapy is a non-surgical, office-based prostate therapy used to treat BPH in a 30-minute treatment. Cooled ThermoTherapy uses precisely targeted microwave energy to heat and destroy enlarged prostate tissue while a cooling mechanism protects healthy, surrounding tissue. This non-surgical BPH treatment is performed on an outpatient basis and requires local anesthesia or oral medications.

Dr. Gigax and a representative from Urologix, the medical supply company, will discuss treatment of enlarged prostate, the Cooled ThermoTherapy treatment, and answer questions from the audience.
