Managing diabetes is critical to avoiding the life-threatening complications of the disease. Members of the Dover Lions Noon Club and the Union Hospital community health and wellness department have teamed up again to screen people with diabetes for those serious complications.

The Dover Lions are helping support this important screening both through their presence, their financial support, and their used eyeglass collection opportunity. It’s a natural partnership for community health and wellness and the Lions as both focus on prevention of disease and complications related to diseases such as diabetes.

The Diabetes Screening Day will be held Saturday, Nov. 5 at Union Hospital. The cost is $5 per person. Appointments for the screening are available between 8 a.m. and noon and may be made by calling the hospital’s community relations office at 330-602-0778 during business hours.

The AB “Sees” screening will include the A1C test, which provides the average blood glucose level over a two to three month period. It has been called the “batting average” of blood sugar control. Fasting prior to the test is not required. Blood pressure checks will be included.

Members of the Union Hospital medical staff are donating their time to provide the screenings. Ophthalmologist Dr. Thomas Perkowski M.D. and his staff will provide vision testing. Podiatrists Andy Miller, D.P.M. and Adam Myers, D.P.M. will inspect participants’ feet for signs of nerve damage. Ann Strauss RN and certified diabetic educator will provide educational materials.

Poor management of diabetes places a person at increased risk for a number of serious, even life-threatening complications, including heart disease and stroke, blindness, kidney disease, and amputation. For further questions regarding the Diabetes Screening Day, call Union Hospital’s department of community health and wellness at 330-602-0779.
