To the Editor:

Freedom is not free. These were the words that resonated about the grounds of the Tuscarawas County courthouse during the Veterans Day celebration. The county square is home to soldiers of past wars, and their stone, stern faces portray bravery and determination. They have stood strong throughout time as a reminder of this truth. On this day, Old Glory joined them by whipping in the cool, crisp breeze--showing patriotism at its best.

Individuals, young and old, gathered to mark the significant day following an election with high voter turnout. Later this month, we will gather around the table with family and friends to give thanks. Together, this is a season of being grateful for our freedom and those we love.

Back at the courthouse, we saluted military veterans--living and deceased--for the sacrifices they gave for our country. This December, we will also mark the 70th anniversary of the tragic Pearl Harbor attack.

On that devastating day, history changed the world as we knew it. It pushed our nation to the brink. However, we circled the wagons and embraced the words of FDR after the deadly assault. He declared, “There is nothing to fear but fear itself.” This memorable account fueled a remarkable movement in our country’s past.

It led to new optimism and formation of the greatest generation. Today, we need to take a moment to pause to remember those who served and those currently serving. Are we on the verge of the next greatest generation? Only time will tell, but in the meanwhile, we must not forget to make that simple gesture—say thank you.
