Scholarships and seedlings offered by Soil and Water Conservation District

The annual tree seedling sale is promoting planting of evergreen, ornamental, and fruit trees as part of the ongoing mission of the Tuscarawas Soil and Water Conservation District.

Two major themes surface each January and February – landowners think about the spring planting season, and high school seniors begin to scramble for college funds in earnest. The Tuscarawas Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is announcing plans to help with both.

First, the SWCD, with its mission of “providing assistance for the wise use of our natural resources for present and future generations,” is committed to encouraging young people to study conservation and natural resource issues and eventually enter the growing field. To help, they are offering a scholarship.

“Applicants for our $500 scholarship must be pursuing a degree in the fields of agriculture conservation or natural resources,” explained Tracy Haney, district program administrator. “The applicant must be a Tuscarawas County resident or graduating in 2012 from a Tuscarawas County high school. Homeschooled students are also eligible. With the soaring costs of tuition, at both private and state run institutions, scholars realize that every penny counts.”

Any high school senior planning on attending technical college, two-year associate or four-year bachelor degree programs can apply. Information on the scholarship has been distributed to area high school guidance counselors. All applications must be received by May 4, 2012.

“The field of natural resources is more important than ever in our rapidly changing world,” noted Haney. “We need bright, environmentally conscious young people to enter the workforce.”

“This is a great way to encourage our young people to enter into work in this very important and growing field,” noted Haney. “We are thankful that we have so many supporters in the agricultural community who donate to make this scholarship possible.”

Fundraisers throughout the year provide funding for the scholarship, and include an agriculture appreciation breakfast and product sales.

With the spring planting season just around the corner, the Tuscarawas SWCD is also busy preparing for its annual tree seedling fundraiser. The sale is part of their ongoing effort to promote environmentally sound practices in Tuscarawas County.

“We also have Plantskydd Deer Repellent products available this year. It’s a long term, environmentally safe product sprayed on plants and trees that repels deer and rabbits and keep them from gnawing on the seedlings,” noted SWCD staff member Julie Gordon. “We are offering evergreen, ornamental, and fruit tree varieties.”

Blue spruce, white pine, Norway spruce, white oak, red oak, American chestnut, flowering dogwood, and red haven peach seedling packets are available, and all are reasonably priced. Orders will be taken as long as supplies last, with seedling pickup scheduled to take place at the Norma Johnson Center, just off state Route 39 in Dover, April 27, from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.
